Amanda Chase, left, poses in June in front of a QAnon banner attached to the Hummer compounded by Philadelphia police on Thursday,Virginia state Sen. Amanda Chase—one of the leading figures in the Virginia far-right’s ongoing campaign against gun control and COVID-19 pandemic measures, and a candidate for the Republican nomination to run against incumbent Gov. Ralph Northam in 2022—has multiple associations with LaMotta, including hiring him to provide security at her announcement event in February.Chase also has posed with LaMotta and his “Virginia Patriots” group alongside the Hummer that was impounded after the men were arrested Thursday, in photos that were on the group’s Facebook page before it was removed. She can be seen posing with a semiautomatic rifle in front of a QAnon banner raised alongside the Hummer. When someone on Facebook pointed out to Chase that QAnon is considered a domestic extremist group, she responded, “Guess I just triggered a liberal.”But on Friday, Chase denied any connection to the men charged in the plot in a Facebook post. “Give me a break,” she wrote. “There is no connection. The individual has never worked for my campaign as paid staff or asked by my campaign to help out as a volunteer. He is simply a supporter that shows up on occasion at events.” The men’s Hummer bore a large “Q” sticker with the hashtag #WWG1WGA, which stands for the QAnon motto “Where We Go One, We Go All.” One of the two men arrested, as WHYY reported, is a Chesapeake man named Antonio Paredes LaMotta, whose social media accounts are filled with QAnon and other conspiracy theories. The vehicle is linked to a group calling itself the “Virginia Armed Patriots.”In a blog post, LaMotta had described COVID-19 as a “psyop,” and justified killing the people he considers responsible for the pandemic.“The entire plot is equivalent to crimes against humanity for causing premeditated deaths, suffering, and economic hardship, in combination with the suppression of preventive medications and natural treatments,” read the post. “Killing these people is a legitimate act of self-defense and not a crime.”- Advertisement – LaMotta had also predicted that Trump would win the election. “Election or Not, Trump will win by a landslide, if you can’t see that, you’re in denial,” he wrote in late August. In other posts, he appears to have embraced sovereign citizen ideology, which claims that ordinary people can simply declare themselves no longer subject to federal, state, and local laws by filing papers filled with legal gobbledygook. “Folks, don’t let the democrats brainwash you about taxes,” he wrote in September. “We have two kinds of citizens (Sovereign citizens and First Class citizens). Ones you’ve relied on public schools, borrowed money that you can’t pay, Social Welfare, the democrats will be able to slowly shackle you into slavery. Matter-fact, you can’t become First-Class citizens if your kids go to public schools.”He added: “The teachers don’t even know about First-Class and Sovereign Citizens … They’ve been programmed to preach that we’re a democracy … but it’s beyond that … they are preaching Socialism now.”- Advertisement – The men, ages 42 and 61, were found to be carrying a 40-caliber pistol and a 9mm handgun, respectively. Neither of the men had a valid permit for carrying weapons in Pennsylvania, and were promptly arrested. An additional gun was found inside the Hummer, police said. The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that police had been warned by FBI agents in Norfolk to be “on the lookout for a mother, son and another man from Virginia Beach traveling to the Philadelphia region to ‘straighten things out’ as vote counting continued.” They were believed to have an AR-15 rifle in the car and were believed to have recently purchased large amounts of ammunition and gun parts.- Advertisement –
Republican politicians and right wing media sources sized on the news that some number of Georgia ballots remained to be scanned. Not only was this played up as “Trump ballots being discarded” in a process where no Republicans were watching. In fact, the ballots — all 342 of them — were from heavily Democratic Fulton County, and they were scanned in not just with a Republican observer watching, but under the supervision of a monitor sent by Raffensperger. None of that stopped either Georgia’s Republican Senate candidates, or Donald Trump’s campaign, from claiming the incident is “proof” of fraud. For the moment, none of the hastily constructed legal challenges offered by Trump’s campaign have gone anywhere, even when boosted by a Trump-friendly presence on the Supreme Court. But there’s no reason to believe that Trump’s team is about to let any of their claims drop soon … or ever. For the record, in 2016 Hillary Clinton’s campaign informed Donald Trump that, should Trump win, they would call within 15 minutes of AP’s declaration. But in the end it didn’t go that way — because Clinton called just seconds after the announced decision to give her concession, congratulate Trump, and offer to help in any way she could. There is a huge difference between being unhappy about the outcome of an election, and accepting that outcome. With McConnell’s blessing, Republicans are coming down strongly on the side of supporting Trump, even as it requires rejecting democracy.Among the Republicans most eagerly rushing toward a reverse coup, is Lindsey Graham. Freshly blessed with evidence that he can get away with anything, Graham has decided to make it clear to Trump that his tongue has not been lured by any other boots. “We win because of our ideas,” said Graham on Fox News. “We lose because they cheat us.”- Advertisement – – Advertisement – A long held political truism is that Democrats fall in love with new leadership, while Republicans simply fall in line. The native authoritarian streak within the GOP expressed itself this week as Mitch McConnell gave the all clear for Republicans in Congress to join Donald Trump in assailing the outcome of the election with precisely zero evidence. As The New York Times reports, McConnell didn’t just say that Trump was “100% within his rights to look into allegations of irregularities and weigh his legal options,” he applauded Trump’s refusal to accept the results of voting, while claiming that Democrats “just spent four years refusing to accept the validity of the last election.” – Advertisement – Meanwhile, in Georgia, the dynamic is even more astounding. Facing a runoff election for the two seats that will determine control of the Senate, it might seem that David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler would find it beneficial to support the Republican governor and Republican secretary of state in charge of the elections there. Instead, they issued a joint missive attacking the state’s handing of the election, calling it an “embarrassment,” filled with “problems,” and complaining of “too many failures in Georgia elections this year.”Perdue and Loeffler aren’t just placing their support of Donald Trump ahead of their loyalty to Republican leadership in their own state, they are betting that Georgia’s Republican voters will do the same. They’re betting that those voters will agree with them in attacking their own state, for the benefit of Trump. And what’s the will of the people, compared to the will of Trump? This intra-party mudslinging might seem like the sort of action that would generate a massive schism within the GOP. If it was happening on the Democratic side, it would certainly generate a raft of “Dems in disarray” stories to be blissfully amplified by every media outlet. But Georgia’s once and would-be-again senators aren’t wrong; because support for Trump is all that’s left of the Republican Party. To the party, Georgia governor Brian Kemp and Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger committed the grievous sin of running a fair election. – Advertisement –
As Politico reports, the fact that Tata was rejected the last time he went before the Senate for a variety of insulting and Islamophobic tweets—that’s no longer seen as an issue. Everyone Trump appoints from now on will simply be an “acting” appointment, without getting the Senate involved. After all, what harm could it do to hand the Defense Department over to a racist xenophobe with a long list of grudges, if it’s just for a few months?Tata probably won’t be moving on up on his own. Previously, Anderson had pushed back against several other potential nominees that the Trump White House tried to plant at the Defense Department. That includes right-wing radio host Frank Wuco, who shares Tata’s Islamophobia in a bigly way. That includes making claims that Hillary Clinton had ties to the Muslim Brotherhood, that former Attorney General Eric Holder was a secret member of the Black Panthers, and that John Brennan had converted to Islam. He also endorsed the idea that the U.S. should just turn Syria “into glass” and suggested that the best way to handle Afghanistan would be to drop “a couple of low-yield tactical nuclear weapons.”But wait, there’s more. Anderson was also the person who blocked the appointment of Rich Higgins. As CNN reports, Higgins wrote a book in which he accused a conspiracy made up of ”the media, Islamists, Black Lives Matter, the ACLU, the United Nations and cultural Marxists,” who all conducted a coordinated attack against Trump. Which is pretty impressive. If there’s someone who can coordinate all those disparate groups, maybe they should be offered a job at the Pentagon.- Advertisement – Tata, Wuco, and Higgins are emblematic of the kind of selections made by Trump—the kind of selections that, until now, have been held back by the last remaining layers of experienced professionals, or by some level of concern over public perception. But all that is gone now. The only thing to hope for is that these people won’t be there long, and they won’t do lasting damage. Tata’s past hits included a number of attacks on Obama, including claims that the president was trying to “subvert U.S. national interests to Islam.” But Obama was far from Tata’s only target. He also accused Hillary Clinton of treason and sedition. And he went at length into a theory that former CIA Director John Brennan—who Tata accused of being an ally of Vladimir Putin— was sending out coded messages to assassinate Donald Trump. For reasons that have to be read to be properly laughed at.Naturally, all this endeared Tata to Trump, who named him to the No. 3 role at the Pentagon back in June. With Esper and Anderson gone, it’s Tata’s chance to move ahead.- Advertisement – – Advertisement –

The low case-fatality ratio is unusual for pneumonic plague, which suggests that the number of suspected cases may be overestimated, the WHO stated. The outbreaks, which include 626 suspected cases, occurred between Jul 31 and Oct 8 in two health zones in the Haut-Uele district, most of them in the Wamba zone of Oriental province in the northern part of the country. The plague bacterium, Yersinia pestis, circulates mainly among rodents and their fleas but occasionally spreads to humans. It is transmitted primarily by flea bites, direct contact, or inhalation of contaminated respiratory droplets. Oct 19, 2006 (CIDRAP News) – The World Health Organization reported last week that 42 people in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) died recently of suspected pneumonic plague. Plague kills 30% to 60% of infected people if left untreated, but it can be effectively treated with antibiotics and other measures if diagnosed in time, according to the WHO. Pneumonic plague accounts for only 2% of plague cases. About 99% of all plague cases and deaths occur in Africa. The agency said a team from Medecins sans Frontieres (Doctors without Borders), the WHO, and the provincial health ministry carried out the initial investigation. Disease surveillance was being stepped up, and authorities were implementing case management, contact tracing, and sensitization measures in the outbreak area. May 27, 2005, CIDRAP News article “Plague outbreak highlighted ongoing problem in Africa” In rapid diagnostic tests in the field, three of eight samples were positive for pneumonic plague, the least common but most lethal form of the disease. Further laboratory analysis was underway, the WHO said. Last year’s record tourist season in 2017 is confirmed by the growth of tourism revenues, as well as an even higher share in GDP than in 2016.According to the Croatian National Bank (CNB), in 2017, revenues in tourism from foreign guests amounted to 9 billion and 493 million euros, which compared to 2016 (8 billion and 635 million euros), represents an increase of 10 percent, or 858 million euros. Also, the share of revenues from travel – tourism in total GDP in 2017 was 19,6 percent, which is an increase of 0,7 percentage points compared to 2016.”Along with a favorable external environment and the progress of structural reforms, tourism is one of the main generators of growth in the Croatian economy. Including domestic consumption, tourism revenues in 2017 exceeded 11 billion euros with a growth of 10 percent, which is the best indicator of how much Croatian tourism has progressed. This year, we expect almost a billion euros of investment, which will further improve our offer, and with the planned legislative changes and reform measures of this Government, I am sure that Croatian tourism will be even more successful in the future.” pointed out Tourism Minister Gary Cappelli. In the fourth quarter, ie during October, November and December 2017, revenues from tourism amounted to EUR 807 million, which is an increase of 733 percent compared to the same period last year (EUR 10 million), ie an increase of EUR 74 million. while tourism in total GDP amounted to 6,7 percent, which compared to the same period in 2016 represents an increase in the share of 0,3 percentage points. The problem is not in tourism, but in the poor state of the economy The share of tourism revenues of 19,6 percent of GDP shows the catastrophic economic situation in Croatia. Also, when one country is so dependent on one sector, and especially on tourism where there are factors that we cannot influence, a greater instability puts the whole country in big trouble and threatens its stability. It would be optimal if the share of tourism in GDP is a maximum of 5 percent, but the main problem is not tourism, as all other sectors are not at a much better level. Especially production and exports, which in addition to tourism (year-round) should be one of our main industries. The share of tourism in GDP in Croatia is by far the highest in Europe. For example, one Germany last year had a share of tourism in GDP of 1,1 percent, Italy 2,2 percent, France 1,9, Spain 4,7, Austria 4.9…But, again, this is not a problem of tourism, but of the bad situation in the country, ie all other economic sectors.
